What Is Backflow (And Why Should You Care)?

Your drinking water flows one direction: from the city main into your property. Backflow is when it flows backward — contaminated water from your irrigation system, boiler, or commercial equipment getting sucked back into the public water supply. It happens during pressure drops: a water main break, a fire hydrant opening, or heavy demand nearby.

The consequences are serious. Backflow incidents have caused entire neighborhoods to be put on boil-water notices. Fertilizers, pesticides from irrigation, chemicals from commercial processes, bacteria from stagnant lines — all of these can enter the drinking water system through an unprotected or failed connection.

That’s why California water districts require backflow prevention devices on irrigation systems, commercial properties, fire sprinkler lines, and any cross-connection. And they require those devices to be tested annually by a certified tester. No test on file? You’ll get a notice. Ignore the notice? They can shut off your water.

The Annual Test: What Actually Happens

A lot of property owners dread the backflow letter from their water district. Here’s the reality: the test takes 20-30 minutes and is straightforward.

We arrive with calibrated test gauges, shut off the downstream valves, and connect to the device’s test cocks. We measure whether each check valve holds pressure correctly and whether the relief valve opens at the right threshold. Every reading gets documented on the official test form.

If it passes: we file the certification directly with your water district. You’re done for the year.

If it fails: we’ll tell you exactly why — usually a worn check valve seal, debris in the valve, or a tired spring. Most failures are repairable on the spot with a rebuild kit ($150–$400 in parts). We’ll fix it, retest, and file. One visit, handled.

Types of Backflow Devices We Service

  • Reduced Pressure Zone (RPZ / RP) — the most common for irrigation and commercial. Highest protection level. Must be tested annually.
  • Double Check Valve Assembly (DCVA) — common on fire lines and some commercial applications. Annual testing required.
  • Pressure Vacuum Breaker (PVB) — common on residential irrigation. Annual testing required in most districts.
  • Atmospheric Vacuum Breaker (AVB) — simple, inexpensive, but can’t be tested and can’t have downstream shutoffs. We often recommend upgrading these.

New Installations

Installing a new irrigation system? Adding a commercial tenant improvement? Your water district will require a backflow device before they’ll approve the connection. We install the correct device for your application, sized for your flow rate, in compliance with local code — including proper clearance, drainage for RPZ relief discharge, and freeze protection. We handle the permit paperwork and schedule the initial test.

Honest Pricing

Annual backflow testing: $75–$150 per device (most homes have one; commercial properties may have several). Minor repairs/rebuilds: $150–$450. Full device replacement: $500–$1,500 depending on size and type. New installation: $600–$2,000. We file all paperwork with your water district at no extra charge.

Don’t Ignore That Letter

Water districts send testing reminders 30-60 days before the deadline. If you miss it, you’ll get a second notice, then a final notice, then a shutoff warning. The test itself is cheap and fast — the headache of a shutoff notice is not. Call us when the letter arrives and we’ll handle everything.

Backflow FAQs

What happens if my backflow device fails the test?

We can usually repair it on the spot — most failures are worn seals or debris, fixed with a rebuild kit ($150–$400). We’ll retest immediately and file the passing result. You won’t need a second appointment.

How do I know when my test is due?

Your water district sends a notice, typically 30-60 days before the annual deadline. The due date is usually the anniversary of your last test. We also offer annual reminder scheduling so you never miss it.

Do you file the paperwork with the water district?

Yes — we submit test results directly to your water company electronically or by fax/mail, whichever they require. You’ll get a copy for your records.

My device is old and keeps failing. Should I replace it?

If a device fails two years in a row, replacement is usually more economical than another rebuild. Modern devices are also more reliable and easier to test. We’ll give you an honest assessment, not a sales pitch.

Are you certified to test backflow devices?

Yes. Our testers hold current backflow certification recognized by California water districts, and our test gauges are calibrated annually as required.

Can I test it myself?

No. California water districts only accept tests from certified testers using calibrated equipment. DIY testing isn’t recognized and won’t satisfy the requirement.
