What Counts as Outdoor Plumbing

Everything water-related outside your walls: hose bibbs (outdoor faucets), irrigation system connections and backflow devices, outdoor kitchen and BBQ plumbing, yard hydrants, pool equipment plumbing, exterior water lines, and drainage. If water flows through it and it’s outside, we handle it.

Outdoor plumbing fails differently than indoor. UV degradation cracks exposed PVC and cheap fittings. Soil movement stresses buried lines. Hard water scales up hose bibbs and valves faster outdoors where they’re rarely maintained. And in colder inland areas, the occasional freeze can split a standard hose bibb overnight.

Hose Bibb Repair & Replacement

The humble outdoor faucet causes an outsized share of water damage. A leaking hose bibb wastes hundreds of gallons and โ€” worse โ€” a split bibb inside the wall can flood your interior. Here’s what we see:

Constant dripping: worn washer or cartridge. Quick fix, but we check the valve seat too โ€” a damaged seat means a new washer won’t hold.

Leaking from the handle or stem: packing nut issue, usually fixable without replacement.

Water coming from inside the wall: the bibb body is split (freeze damage) or the connection has failed. This needs immediate replacement โ€” water is going where it shouldn’t.

Low flow: mineral buildup (very common) or a partially closed interior shutoff. We diagnose before replacing.

When we replace hose bibbs, we install frost-free (freeze-proof) models as standard โ€” the shutoff sits 8-12 inches inside the heated wall, not at the exterior. It’s cheap insurance against freeze damage, even in mild climates. We also add individual shutoffs inside so you can winterize without killing water to the whole house.

Irrigation Plumbing

We handle the plumbing side of irrigation: the main connection, backflow preventer, pressure regulation, mainline repairs, and valve manifolds. (We don’t design sprinkler layouts โ€” that’s landscaping โ€” but we make sure the water gets there reliably.)

Common irrigation plumbing problems: cracked mainlines from root intrusion or soil shifting, failed zone valves, broken backflow devices, and pressure issues. California’s expansive clay soils are brutal on rigid PVC โ€” we repair with proper bedding and flexible connections that move with the soil instead of cracking.

Pressure regulation matters. Many California homes have 80+ PSI at the hose bibb. Irrigation components are typically rated for much less. Without a pressure regulator, you’ll replace sprinkler heads and valves constantly. We test your pressure and install regulation where needed.

Outdoor Kitchens & BBQ Islands

Outdoor kitchens are booming in California, and the plumbing is the part most often botched. Sinks need hot and cold supply lines run underground (properly insulated and protected), plus drainage that meets code โ€” you can’t just drain a sink into the dirt. We run dedicated lines, install proper traps and vents, add freeze protection, and make sure your outdoor sink drains legally and reliably.

Gas lines for BBQ islands are a separate specialty (see our gas line services), but we coordinate both so you’re not managing two contractors.

Yard Hydrants & Remote Water Access

Need water at the back of a large property, in a garden, or near livestock? Yard hydrants give you a freeze-proof faucet anywhere you can run a water line. We trench the line below frost depth, install a proper hydrant with drainage, and backfill correctly. No more dragging 200 feet of hose.

Honest Pricing

Hose bibb replacement: $200โ€“$450. Frost-free upgrade: $250โ€“$500. Irrigation mainline repair: $300โ€“$900 depending on depth and length. Backflow device install/repair: $400โ€“$1,200 (see our backflow page). Outdoor kitchen rough-in: $1,500โ€“$4,000. Yard hydrant: $600โ€“$1,200. Flat quotes, no surprises.

Seasonal Maintenance Tips

Before winter (yes, even in California): disconnect hoses from bibbs (a connected hose defeats frost-free protection), shut off and drain irrigation lines in freeze-prone areas, and check backflow device insulation. In spring: slowly repressurize irrigation, check for winter cracks, and test each zone. Five minutes of prevention beats a flooded wall.

Outdoor Plumbing FAQs

Should I leave my hose connected in winter?

No โ€” disconnect hoses before any freeze risk. A connected hose traps water in the bibb, defeating frost-free protection and causing the exact freeze damage the bibb is designed to prevent. It takes 10 seconds and saves hundreds.

Water is coming out of my wall where the hose bibb is. How urgent is this?

Very. That means the bibb body or connection inside the wall has failed, and water is going into your wall cavity. Turn off the interior shutoff to that bibb (or your main) and call us. Wall damage compounds fast.

Can you run a water line to my detached garage or shed?

Yes. We trench below frost depth, use proper materials for underground service, and install freeze-proof endpoints. We’ll also advise on whether you need a separate shutoff and backflow protection.

My irrigation system has terrible pressure. Can you fix it?

Usually yes. We test static and dynamic pressure, check for mainline restrictions or leaks, verify the backflow device isn’t clogged, and install pressure regulation if needed. Most pressure problems are diagnosable in one visit.

Do outdoor plumbing repairs need permits?

Simple repairs (hose bibb replacement, irrigation fixes) typically don’t. New water lines, outdoor kitchen rough-ins, and gas lines usually do. We handle permit requirements and inspections where needed.

How deep do you bury outdoor water lines?

Below local frost depth โ€” typically 12-18 inches minimum in most of California, deeper in mountain areas. We bed in sand (not rocky backfill) to protect the pipe from soil movement.
