Water Filtration Systems in California
Does your water taste like a swimming pool? White crust on every faucet? Spots on dishes no matter what you do? California’s hard water and chlorine are rough on your pipes, your appliances, and your skin. We install whole-house filtration and softening systems sized for your home — so every tap delivers clean, great-tasting water.

What California Water Does to Your Home
Let’s be honest about what comes out of the tap in most of California. Depending on your city, your water travels through aging municipal pipes, picks up chlorine and chloramines from treatment plants, and carries dissolved minerals — mostly calcium and magnesium — that make it “hard.” In parts of Southern California and the Inland Empire, hardness levels run 15-25 grains per gallon. Anything above 7 is considered hard. Above 10 is very hard.
Here’s what that does over time. Hard water leaves scale inside your pipes, narrowing them like clogged arteries. Your water heater works harder and dies years earlier — I’ve pulled heating elements caked in an inch of white scale from 6-year-old heaters. Dishwashers, washing machines, and ice makers all wear out faster. Faucets and showerheads crust over. And then there’s what it does to you: dry itchy skin, dull hair, and that film on everything no matter how much you clean.
Chlorine is the other culprit. It’s necessary for safe municipal water, but you don’t want to bathe in it or drink it. It dries skin, fades clothes, and gives water that pool taste. Some cities now use chloramines, which are even harder to remove with basic filters.
Filtration vs. Softening — What’s the Difference?
This is the question I get most, so let me clear it up like I would at your kitchen table.
Water softeners remove hardness minerals (calcium, magnesium) through ion exchange. They solve scale buildup, spots on dishes, stiff laundry, and dry skin. If your main complaint is white crust and appliance damage, you need a softener.
Water filtration systems remove chlorine, chloramines, sediment, and often lead, PFAS, and other contaminants. They solve taste, odor, and chemical concerns. If your water smells like a pool or tastes off, you need filtration.
Most California homes benefit from both. That’s why we typically install a combined system: a softener for hardness plus carbon filtration for chlorine and chemicals. One system, installed at your main water line, treats every drop that enters your home.

What We Install (And Why These Systems)
After 20+ years, I’ve learned which equipment actually lasts. We install:
- Salt-based ion exchange softeners — the gold standard for hard water. Sized by your household’s grains-per-day load, not guesswork. We test your water first and size the unit to your actual hardness and usage.
- Catalytic carbon filtration — removes chlorine AND chloramines (standard carbon doesn’t handle chloramines well). This matters in cities that switched disinfectants.
- Sediment pre-filters — catch sand, rust, and debris before they reach your softener and filters, extending their life.
- Reverse osmosis (under-sink) — for drinking water at the kitchen tap. Removes up to 99% of dissolved solids, lead, fluoride, and PFAS. Pairs perfectly with whole-house treatment.
We don’t install undersized big-box units that regenerate every night and waste salt. Proper sizing means efficient operation, less salt, less water waste, and 15-20 year equipment life.
Honest Pricing
Whole-house softener + filtration combos typically run $2,500–$6,000 installed, depending on home size, water conditions, and system capacity. Under-sink reverse osmosis adds $500–$900. We test your water free, show you the numbers, and quote one flat price before any work starts. No “today only” pressure — just the facts.
The DIY Reality Check
Those $400 softeners at the hardware store? They’re undersized for California hardness, use cheap resin that fouls in two years, and the “installation kit” assumes your main line is accessible and properly configured. I’ve replaced dozens of them. A properly sized, professionally installed system costs more upfront but works for decades. This is one of those jobs where doing it right the first time saves thousands.
Protecting Your Investment
Once installed, maintenance is simple: keep salt in the brine tank (we’ll show you how to check), change sediment pre-filters every 6-12 months, and let us do an annual checkup. Your water heater will last longer, your appliances will thank you, and you’ll stop buying bottled water.

Water Filtration FAQs
How do I know if I need a softener, a filter, or both?
Get your water tested — we do it free. High hardness (white scale, spots) means softener. Chlorine taste/smell means filtration. Most California homes have both issues, so a combined system is usually the answer.
Will a softener make my water taste salty?
No. A properly functioning softener adds only a tiny amount of sodium — about as much as a slice of bread per day’s worth of water. If you’re on a sodium-restricted diet, we can route a hard-water line to your kitchen tap or add RO for drinking water.
How long do these systems last?
Quality softeners and filtration systems last 15-20 years with basic maintenance. The cheap big-box units typically fail in 3-5 years. Buy once, cry once.
Does a water softener waste a lot of water?
Modern high-efficiency softeners use 30-50 gallons per regeneration and only regenerate when needed (demand-initiated). Old timer-based units wasted far more. We’ll size yours for efficiency.
Can I install it myself?
Technically possible, but main-line plumbing, proper sizing, drain connections for backwash, and California code compliance make this a pro job. A bad install can flood your garage or contaminate your water.
What about PFAS / ‘forever chemicals’?
Reverse osmosis and certain carbon systems effectively reduce PFAS. If this is a concern, we’ll design your system specifically for it and show you the NSF certifications.
